Valais is the large canton of south-west Switzerland and our places to stay here include several in world-famous mountain resorts such as Zermatt. The Rhone Valley runs through Valais roughly east to west. To the south of this wide, flat-soled valley some of the loveliest Swiss mountain valleys thread up towards the chain of great 4,000-m peaks that march along the border with Italy: the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Dent Blanche and many more.
In the past, this was one of the poorest areas of the country, whose inhabitants emigrated to an easier life in Austria, Italy and elsewhere in Switzerland, but staying in the same tightly knit communities known as ‘Wallisers’.
As elsewhere, our selection of places to stay in Switzerland’s Valais offers an exceptionally interesting range to choose from: guesthouses, restaurants-with-rooms and small hotels. Whichever, they all have the special qualities of hand-picked character and charm we seek out.
