In this section – Switzerland's Northern Cantons – we lump together places to stay in five cantons in the north of Switzerland, mostly bordering Germany. They are: Basel and its surrounds; Solothurn; Aargau and Zurich.
Basel has one of the best small hotels our inspectors have ever seen, Zum Ochsen while Zurich has fine hotels to cater for international businessmen. Both Basel and Zurich have excellent shops and museums, old architecture and a rich cultural heritage. Another gem in this region is the well-preserved town of Solothurn.
As elsewhere, our selection of places to stay in the Northern Cantons of Switzerland offers an exceptionally interesting range to choose from: guesthouses, restaurants with rooms and small hotels. Whichever, they all have the special qualities of hand-picked character and charm we seek out.
