El Juncal is a hotel of contrasts. On the one hand the property, near Ronda, dates back to the 18th century and has its own bodega to produce wine for its guests and on the other its interior is very modern and minimalistic, which doesn't seem to work too badly in this case. The bedrooms are small but the space has been maximised with clever modern designs and use of fabrics. Although much of the furniture around the hotel is rather hard and stark, fortunately this sentiment does not extend to the beds. The designs on the walls and the rugs in the rooms might be a little try-hard, but the views that you get from the private terraces make up for that. You can dine up in your room or make use of the ultra-chic glass restaurant with its fine organic Spanish food and wine.
During the day you can make full use of the large pool, sauna and Jacuzzi, or for the truly self-indulgent, a massage, either in your room or on your terrace. However, Ronda is tantalisingly close (5 minute drive) for those that cannot resist this ancient hill town. The receptionist can even book you into restaurants overlooking the famous gorge, or organize a guided tour around the Medieval walls, and Arab baths or bullring.
