Small and elegant
If you are touring by car, this small, elegant hotel is well worth a detour. Alternatively, you can fly to the hotel’s private airfield, from where you can also take sightseeing trips as far away as Malta or Tunisia.
The setting - far away from major roads in a pastoral landscape of rolling farmland cut by white lanes and stone walls where the dominant sound is birdsong - is idyllic. The hotel has been the home of the Nifosì family since the 18th century. Built as a fortified convent in the 15th century, it was later used by the Knights of the Order of St John on their way to Malta. In converting the convent, Signor Nifosì, an architect, has made every effort to preserve the building’s original structure, retaining the original pitch and limestone floors and transforming the monks’ cells into comfortable and stylish bedrooms with modern bathrooms. A recent addition is a delightful little walled garden filled with exotic Mediterranean trees and shrubs; there is small pool and bar - bliss in the summer heat.
Food is important at the Eremo; the restaurant serves unpretentious dishes from the Sicilian highlands using home grown organic produce and accompanied by a fine selection of local wines.
