A venerable old hostelry which has been run by the Franzelin family since 1720, although it dates much earlier. Today, Georg Franzelin is gradually taking over the management of the hotel from his parents and has cleverly given it subtle contemporary touches without compromising the old-world atmosphere.
   The solid, square building stands on the cobbled main square of Aldino, a quiet village immersed in rolling pastureland in the foothills of the Dolomites. The atmosphere once inside the arched doorway has a comforting, timeless quality and many of the original features of the house remain intact. A flight of wide stone steps, worn down by centuries of use, lead to the bedrooms which are furnished with a mix of old and new: carved or painted Tyrolean chests and beds sit alongside stylish Artemide lightning and groovy cowhide floor rugs. Marble bathrooms are immaculate.
   Downstairs, there’s a large terrace for summer meals, or you can eat in one of the cosy dining rooms, which include the original wood-panelled Stübe complete with vast ceramic stove. Georg’s mother presides over the kitchen, producing wonderful local food with a light touch.
   There is terrific walking nearby and more dramatic mountain scenery is only a half hour drive away.
