Our selection of places to stay in Lorraine are somewhat out of the traveller’s way, unless heading east towards the German border. It is quite a large administrative region, sandwiched between Alsace and Champagne-Ardenne, with Luxembourg to the north and Franche-Comte to the south

The industrial centres of Metz and Nancy are the main population centres. Metz is the capital. The region combines heavy industry with quiet, green landscapes of ploughed fields, thick forests, rivers and lakes. Some of the fiercest fighting of the First World War took place here, commemorated movingly at Verdun by monuments, museums and the Verdun-Douaumont Ossuaire.

As elsewhere, our recommendations in Lorraine have the special qualities of hand-picked character and charm we seek out.
