Ideally located in the middle of Loire chateau and wine country – many of the big names are inside a 40 km radius, including Ussy, Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau. They are among the 21 chateaus within reach plus famous Loire vineyards, plus the interesting wine town of Saumur and the historic Blois. Activities organized by the hotel include fishing, riding, a vineyard tour and, unusually, fruit picking.
Relax and absorb the easygoing atmosphere of this human-scale chateau, elegant but not intimidating. The rooms are as spacious as you would expect, decorated in a traditional style, some with sweeping views over the 7-hectare grounds.
Food in the restaurant is ‘semi-gastronomic’ – in other words unpretentious but delicious – a light touch is given to traditional French dishes. In fine weather, eat outside on the expansive veranda giving on to the rose garden.
Laroche Ploquin has the added interest of having been a hub of the French Resistance during the Second World War. Many agents owe their lives to being concealed here by charismatic chatelaine Comtess De Poix, who belonged to the resistance network known as Turma Vengeance. She was awarded not only the French Legion of Honour but also the USA’s highest civilian decoration, the Medal of Freedom.
Newly opened in 2017, this is a great addition to the Loire hotel scene. A recent guest raves about dinner being one of the best they’ve had in France and the staff and service second to none.
