Tan-y-Foel means 'the house under the hillside' in Welsh and it lives up to its name. Surrounded by hills near Betws-y-Coed in the heart of Snowdonia, Tan-y-Foel is a beautiful example of a Welsh country house with wonderful views and lush countryside all around. Parts date back to the 16thC; parts are highly contemporary and it pulls it off remarkably well. The interior is a riot of vibrant colours cleverly kept in check with beautiful furnishings and distressed paint work.
The intimate reception rooms are decorated in peaceful earth tones, for relaxing in with a drink before dinner. The gardens are secluded and well looked after, but not too manicured, perfectly in keeping with the ruggedness of the country beyond. All the rooms are individually decorated, comfortable, out of the ordinary. Interesting objets d'art are placed on shelves or hang on the walls making you feel as if you should be somewhere more exotic, certainly farther afield than Wales. The food is adventurous and has earned many awards.
A highly original hotel for people who want something out of the ordinary in Wales.
