An early 17th century coaching inn near Zennor, standing like a beacon on the windswept coastal road that runs between St Ives and Land's End, The Gurnard's Head can claim to be a beacon. Brothers Charles and Edmund Inkin's motto is 'the simple things in life done well' and they reckon on applying this to all aspects of The Gurnard's Head, as also to their other establishments.
The stunning location and views of the Atlantic make this inn popular with walkers, tourists and city dwellers looking for tranquility, although the sounds and smells from the neighbouring farm may not be for urban-outdoor types. The en-suite bedrooms are simple and tastefully decorated, with handmade beds and good linen. Each room is lined with old books and local pictures and maps, which enhances the feeling that guests are staying at the home of friends.
With the Atlantic 500 metres away, locally caught fish is a highlight of the seasonal menu. The lunch would suit most guests, from the hungry walker to those looking to settle in for a benevolently priced fixed price menu with a carafe of wine. In the evening, the menu is short, local and delicious, changing daily according to what suppliers are bringing through the back door. Drink from a choice of well-chosen and affordable wines or local real ales and cider. Too good to be true?
Our reporter, food writer Mark Taylor's reply: 'Except for the quibble about the farmyard smells, it really is that good.'
