Former mansion, expansive gardens, great location
In bohemian Santa Teresa, on a steep hill overlooking the Bay of Guanabara stands Casa Beleza. It's a grand white mansion built in the 30s and, famously, formerly the home of the governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
The house manages to be large without being imposing, and there are only three rooms in the main building with another tucked away in the garden bungalow. They’re furnished simply, but don’t lack character: varnished wood floors, colourful statement walls and a mix of antique and retro furniture.
The breakfast is hearty and can brought to you inside or, weather permitting, in the gardens. These are expansive and contain a startling and exciting array of local wildlife. Try to catch a glimpse of Casa Beleza's pet ‘guard-turtle’ you’ll find slowly patrolling the grounds.
