Karnten, known in English as Carinthia, is Austria’s southernmost state. Our places to stay here include plenty of good, small family-run hotels.
A belt of picturesque lakes, running from east to west, with the massive Tauern mountains as a backdrop, gives the region a Mediterranean feeling, with many a large resort hotel and lakeside promenade. The biggest and best-known lake is the Worthersee, whose water temperature can reach 28 degrees C in summer.
Karnten is popular in winter too, with the southern slopes of the Tauern providing beginner’s and intermediate skiing. The area has long been a national and international playground, with hotel and restaurant standards particularly high.
