For more than 70 years the Julen has been a fixture in the car-free village of Zermatt, famous for its winter sports, but equally attractive in summer for hiking, climbing and summer skiing. Whatever the season, views of the Matterhorn are breathtaking. Julen is a common name in Zermatt, where Paul and Daniela Julen gave their hotel a complete facelift in 1997 and 1998. First, they added a futuristic 3-storey pool and relaxation centre with a so-called adventure swimming pool, gymnasium and sauna. Then they knocked through some walls to create more spacious bedrooms, upgrading the comfort levels throughout.
  This is still very much a family hotel. As well as the three young Julens, many guests remember Bobi, the friendly working sheepdog. Now a new dog, Miss, fills that role. Thankfully, some things never change. On winter evenings, everyone still makes for the Schoferstebli (Sheep Room), with its sheepskin-covered chairs and huge, horned mountain sheep heads adorning the walls. The restaurant, with its Valais specialities, has always had a good reputation. Apart from the obvious fondues and racettes, the lamb dishes are a highlight.
