‘La Cuccagna’ is a mythical country where life is said to flow without a worry, tables are always decked out with food and drink and even vices become virtues. Well, the name fits this place. Perched on the top of a hill in the Umbrian countryside, this retreat offers utter peace in an idyllic setting a short drive away from the gourmet cities of Perugia and Gubbio.
The Anglo-Italian owners, Salvatore and Sarah, renovated La Cuccagna with all the affectionate attention you can expect from a labour of love. The agriturismo occupies three buildings: the farmhouse; an apartment; and ‘La Stalletta’, a converted cow shed. Rustic and airy, the rooms have charming details such as exposed beams, wooden lintels and stone walls. Some have outstanding views over the undulating countryside, while others have their own pergolas where you can laze the day away. The absence of TVs contributes to the peacefulness. The wide sitting room on the main terrace, as well as the inviting infinity swimming pool, face south-west towards blazing sunsets over the olive trees, vines and fruit gardens.
La Cuccagna is set in 12 acres of grounds with plenty of shady corners for relaxation and contemplation, and has its own organic farm. You can taste the local delicacies at Salvatore’s sought-after homemade ‘pizza nights’, organized weekly during high season, and at the heroic breakfasts, a communal affair with a distinct home from home feeling. Sarah and Salvatore are on hand to organise excursions and activities, from pasta making courses to paragliding and truffle hunting, or you can borrow one of the mountain bikes available and get lost in the magnificent countryside. You might then find it hard to tear yourself away for dinner, even though Sarah and Salvatore will offer you plenty of mouth-watering tips for local restaurants easy to reach by car.
