At Podere Terreno you will find everything you might expect from a family guesthouse in the heart of Chianti near Volpaia and Radda in Chianti: a four-hundred-year-old farmhouse with views of vines and olive groves; delicious home cooking; and a genuinely friendly welcome.
The dining room on the upper floor is the centre of the house. As well as eating meals together at the long wooden table, guests can relax in front of the huge, traditional fireplace, its wooden mantle hung with cheerful ceramics and mounted antlers. The room is packed full of rural artifacts: burnished copper vessels hang from the wooden beams, a cupboard hollowed out of a tree trunk, shelves stacked with bottles of wine. Downstairs there is another sitting room. The bedrooms, all off a long corridor, are simply but well furnished, each named after a type of vine, their white plaster walls enlivened with coloured stencils of flowers and plants. Bathrooms are smallish, with slightly garish green tiling.
They make award-winning wine and, come evening, you can take your glass of red to the covered sitting area in the garden and watch the swallows swirling around the terracotta roofs. This is in our bottom price band.
