At just 90 metres from the beginning of the closest ski trail, and with its own luxury health spa, the Hotel du Grand Paradis makes a great base for winter sports.
Built during the Unification of Italy in the latter part of 19thC, the Hotel du Grand Paradis was the first hotel in the village of Cogne. It’s been in the same family for four generations. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and many of the rooms are furnished with local timber.
The restaurant serves a hearty continental breakfast for those who are here for the skiing or to explore the Aosta Valley’s rugged walking trails. If you just want to chill out, the garden and terrace have great mountain views. Dinner isn’t available in the Grand Paradis, but it is served in the Saint’Orso restaurant - also owned by the Paradis – which is just across the square.
For those who have had a hard day of hiking or skiing –and indeed for those who haven’t – the spa is open from 5pm to 8pm. Facilities include Turkish baths, a Finnish sauna and a Scottish shower, where you will be sprayed with water that alternates between hot and cold, mimicking the fickle Scottish weather (or frugality, according to some).
Don’t be put off if you are not a skier or a hiker, the hotel enjoys pride of place in the village centre, overlooking the picturesque village square, where you can relax with a coffee and watch the world go by.
The Grand Paradis is a little bigger than the hotels we usually recommend. However, we were simply won over by the warmth of the welcome and the location. Prices are fair too.
