If you want to visit the fascinating city of Siracusa but stay in the countryside, we can recommend this simple agriturismo. Run by the Norcia family, Limoneto is an organic farm producing citrus fruits, vegetables, olive oil and wine. The solid, white-painted main house is set among orange and lemon groves. The scent from the citrus blossoms in spring is intoxicating.
The welcome here is very Southern Italian: warm and genuine with guests being treated as part of the family. Some of the bedrooms are in the main house while others are in a renovated barn; some are large enough for a family. Though modern rather than characterful, they are ‘comfortable fresh and spotlessly clean’.
The main focus of any stay at the Limoneto, however, is definitely the food which, judging by reports, is fabulous: ‘the best we had’. Adelina Norcia’s no-choice Sicilian menus change daily and feature much of what is grown on the farm. Finish off with a glass of ice-cold home-brewed limoncello.
We would welcome more reports about this place: although we have included it for some years now (urged by readers), we have not yet managed a personal visit. But we like the sound of it very much.
