Our selection of places to stay in Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria are the furthest south on Italy's mainland. Until recently these regions were little developed for international tourism – the infrastructure being much less efficient than the north's and the local economy poor by comparison.
As a result we've always found charming small hotels thin on the ground here. Much of the landscape is stony and barren with rugged mountains and an inhospitable western coastline. The exception is the neighbourhood of the little resort of Maratea, where we have one entry.
As elsewhere, our selection of places to stay in Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria offers an interesting range to choose from: pensioni, alberghi, restaurants-with-rooms and small hotels. Whichever, they all have the special qualities of hand-picked character and charm we seek out. Among our longstanding favourites are: Locanda delle Donne Monache and Villa Cheta Elite.
