The Palazzo Rimondi is tucked away in an arcaded courtyard, with walls painted in pretty shades of rose and ochre, behind arched, wrought-iron gates.
Vaulted roofs, carved stone, panelled wood ceilings and wooden oriels looking out on to the pretty cafe courtyard are the keynotes of this superbly restored complex of 15thC buildings, recently restored by its architect owners and undoubtedly one of the most luxurious and exclusive hideaways in Rethymno. The Rimondi is charming, not least because of a very pleasant courtyard with a breakfast cafe and swimming pool (with a special area for children) and pretty terraces.
Traditional Cretan specialities are served at breakfast. All the apartments have a sitting room, sleeping area and dining area, and most of them have attractive original features such as stone carved arches, wooden ceilings and wooden oriel windows that look out over the courtyard or the surrounding rooftops. The owners have achieved an excellent balance between old and new, retaining the building's character without trying too hard to achieve a medieval look throughout ? despite their medieval stonework, the bedrooms are stylishly modern with some traditional influences, such as low benches along each wall, and tiled floors.
