Cradled in the heart of the Charentais countryside, La Cochère modestly combines rural simplicity with comfort. Rebecca and David Ball took over from the Andersons in 2013 and have set about creating a B&B  where professional standards of hospitality don't make the guests feel ill at ease – we haven’t received a single negative comment about the warmth of their welcome or the quality of the rooms.
Decorated with warm colours and rustic furnishings, the place is equally attractive to its French regulars who are intrigued by its 'anglicité', as it is to its English guests who describe it as 'charmingly French'. The small bedrooms are fresh and pretty, with thick towels and high-quality linen.
Breakfast remains a key attraction, with a variety of bread, cold meats, cheeses, conserves, fruit and pastries. The Balls have also begun to serve dinner here too – you can choose from either a two-course or four-course meal. Surroundings are peaceful although perhaps not worth a huge detour specifically to visit.
   More report welcome.
