We have heard much positive feedback of Le Fleuray near Cangey in the Loire, 'a delightful place', whose two key attractions are a warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere, courtesy of the Newingtons, the lively and committed English owners; and the peaceful, indeed isolated, rural setting in open fields. (Keep faith in the signposting from Cangey: it's more than 6 km outside the village.)
Le Fleuray's popularity can be explained by its position, close to the Loire as well as historic towns like Amboise and Tours and a number of top vineyards, as well as fair prices for prettily and freshly decorated rooms with scenic views (the best with small outdoor sitting areas). There is a handsome conservatory and a particularly attractive terrace for summer dining, and when we visited in high season there was a good-humoured buzz in the dining room from a cross-section of nationalities. Children are well-looked after both in sleeping arrangements and an array of outdoor and indoor entertainment for their days.
A new chef has been installed and we hear some good reports of his handling of local produce - to go with the wide selection of reasonably-priced Loire Valley wines on offer; more views would be most welcome.
