Though well-placed for theatres, the opera and ritzy shops, this part of the eighth district lacks charming yet affordable hotels, so our inspector was delighted to find this one, which opened a few years ago after a two-year renovation. The building is mid-19thC, but, with the exception of the façade and some cornicing, few period details remain. Instead, a very contemporary elegance prevails. Smart glazed doors, guarded by bay trees in tubs, lead into a discreet entrance. Gérard Gallet, who remodelled the Orient Express, is responsible for the interior: colour-washed wood panelling, a striking Delisle chandelier and a happy blend of Louis XVI-style and comfortable modern furniture.
Upstairs, pastel bedrooms and bathrooms show an equally careful attention to detail, including custom-made Swiss furniture and stylish wood-framed bedheads. The linen curtains come from England, the bathroom tiles from Sardinia. Our inspector was particularly taken with the duplexes, where a staircase leads up to the small gallery bedroom. A three-star hotel with three-star prices offering four-star comfort and services. Staff are as suave and chic as the hotel itself.
