We were delighted to discover this outstanding bed-and-breakfast establishment on the outskirts of Fort William, run with great flair by Joan and John Campbell. A ten-minute walk from the fairly charmless town centre brings you to this late Victorian house, set in pretty terraced grounds overlooking Loch Linnhe.
A feminine touch is distinctly in evidence in the immaculate interior, which is decorated with admirable taste and a flair for matching fabrics with furniture and fittings. With your first glimpse at this pristine place, you may be expecting a stand-offish, 'don't touch' approach from the owners, but nothing could be further from the truth at the Grange. Joan Campbell, responsible for the decoration, is naturally easy-going, with a great sense of hospitality.
All three bedrooms are superbly, and individually, decorated and furnished, their bathrooms lavish and luxorious - it all comes as rather a surprise. The Rob Roy room was the one chosen by Jessica Lange, who stayed here during the filming of Rob Roy. Two of the bedrooms have Louis XV style king-size beds, all have chandeliers and all overlook the garden and Loch Linnhe. A distinctive "Hobbit House" is soon to be completed. A delightful place.
