The Rose and Crown was built in 1733 in the pretty light stone village of Romaldkirk, which owes its original layout to the Saxons and its name to the patron saint of the church next door. Thoroughly renovated by Christopher and Alison Davy some years ago, the inn has gone from strength to strength. It is set in the centre of the three-green village. The bar is comfortingly traditional: real ales, natural stone walls, log fire, old photographs, copper and brass knick-knacks. Excellent pub food is served in the Crown
Brasserie and Bar. More traditional four-course dinners, English but imaginatively so, are served on white linen in the oak-panelled dining room and, when in season, often feature local and organic produce, including moorland game, fresh fish from the East Coast, and locally grown vegetables. Fresh bread is baked every day.
There are seven comfortable bedrooms, attractively decorated and furnished with antiques, in the main building. Five more have been added round the courtyard at the back, and open directly on to it. All come with fresh flowers. We revisited in 2007 and liked it as much as ever.

Superior self catering on interesting estate

Anyone who is familiar with the writing of Iris Origo will be particularly interested in La Foce, the estate near Chianciano Terme whose history during the Second World War is so vividly described in her book, War in the Val d'Orcia.
