Since its refurbishment in 2008, the King John Inn has been attracting celebs, urban explorers and even locals to the rural idylls of the Wiltshire – Dorset border. Unpretentious yet sophisticated, this country pub offers up cosmopolitan fare in smart modern settings. Indoors, diners eat on simple wooden benches by the stone fireplace or the impressive solid oak bar. The pork and mustard pies are particularly good, and the homemade bread and fudge are delicious additions. Cask beers and an extensive wine list will keep connoisseurs happy.
On sunny days, the chefs can be found outdoors preparing popular summer dishes and fresh seafood from Poole under the charming new summer pavilion. Think crab on toast, fresh fish and snails.
In the main building, at the top of the steep carpeted staircase, lie five capacious and thoughtfully decorated bedrooms. Our room was comfortable and modern, we especially liked the bay window dressed in exotic floral curtains. The bathroom, whilst roomy, was rather dim, but well equipped with freestanding shower and bath. Next door, there are three family-style apartments in the converted coach house that add to the communal charm of the grounds. In the evenings and on weekends, be prepared for some lively acoustics from the pub or from the humming terrace outside.
