Husband and wife Ian and Jane McAndrew bought Blackaddie back in 2007. Since then, they have worked tirelessly to refurbish the property and now offer seven bedrooms – of which two are classed as suites - and two self-catering cottages. The Grouse Suite, which is the largest of all the rooms, has a Jacuzzi and king sized four-poster bed. The River Suite features a set of French windows that lead out on to the patio, where you can sit by the River Nith as it flows through the end of the garden.
Jane’s detailed knowledge of the area includes suggestions for some great walking routes, not least Mennock Pass to Wenlockhead, which is only a short drive away.
Ian, who is also the head chef, creates some fabulously presented dishes using locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes daily and includes a locally famed seven course-tasting menu with matching wines. Ian was the youngest British chef to be awarded a Michelin star in 1980 and was crowned Scottish Chef of the Year in 2016: the food is that good.
If you’re not too full after dinner, retire to the bar – where there’s a choice of single malt whiskies - and relax by the log fire. Ian, a chatty and affable man who loves to meet his punters, can often be found mingling with guests in the bar when the kitchen closes.
