The Nobles are old friends of this guide, having for many years run Langshott Manor near Horley in Surrey with great warmth and professionalism. They moved to Nonsuch House in Devon 16 years ago, and for 11 years it has been run by their son Kit and his wife Penny.
Nonsuch House is a tall, slim building which stands, rather unprepossessingly, on a hairpin bend in a one-way system high above the Dartmouth ferry at Kingswear. The views, looking across the river towards Dartmouth and out to sea, are superb, and can be seen from all the windows. Bedrooms are named after shipping forecasts and are smart, comfortable and well-equipped – certainly a cut above the normal guest-house. The sitting room is decorated in rich, warm colours and furnished with large, comfy sofas and an open fire. Food is served in the modern conservatory that also has stunning views over the river to the sea. This in turn leads down the hill to a lovely little garden for residents to use.
Kit’s cooking is simple yet delicious, with fresh seafood every day and an award-winning breakfast. The family will organise any of the varied activities around Dartmouth, such as sailing, river trips, or bracing walks.
