No surf here on the beautiful Roseland Peninsula, but there's 'harbour jumping' from St Mawes’ harbour wall instead – a long-established St Mawes pastime at high tide. “We bet our friends to do it, and give the money to charity,” says David Richards, owner of The Idle Rocks and the chairman of Aston Martin.
This is one of those seaside hotels so close to the water you can hear the waves from your bedroom window: magical. With 19 nigh-on flawless (though not large) bedrooms, kids’ playroom, elegant dining room and stone-walled terrace where chilled music plays – it has much to recommend it to a generally younger clientèle. Everything is fresh, new and of the highest quality, predominantly white but liberally splashed with vibrant pattern and colour.
It's hard to find fault here: it could be described as a bit cramped for a fully-fledged hotel, however, we felt that the team are striving for perfection (they're almost there), and would sort out problems as they go. The food is correctly pitched and reflects both ambience and location.
