Despite the change of hotel name, the food in this famous restaurant is as consistent as ever, according to the gourmets among our readers. The Kronprinz Mayerling is one of Austria's top 50 restaurants. Its name reflects the continuing fascination for the mysterious and tragic suicide pact between Crown Prince Rudolf and the beautiful Baroness Marie Vetsera. It all happened 100 years ago at the royal hunting-lodge in nearby Mayerling. Nowadays, the hotels high prices may promote suicidal tendencies among ordinary folk but they do not seem to deter business clients from Vienna. Thankfully, prices in the simpler Landgasthof Marienhof restaurant are affordable.
Chestnut and lime (or linden) trees surround the hotel, which was once an inn for the famous monastery in Heiligenkreuz, not far away. Travellers of old would be astounded by the spacious bedrooms, each with a whirlpool bath, let alone the creations of chef Heinz-Viktor Hanner. No detail is overlooked: herbs are grown in his own garden, the wine list runs to 200 vintages from France, Spain, Italy and Austria, and there is even a Kase-Somelier who selects cheeses for ripening in a special cellar.
