We are happy to report that Helga Figl's programme of renovations at the Forthof has been completed and rooms now match the standard of her well-known restaurant. Her young team of chefs clearly know their business, serving up modern versions of traditional specialities such as Tafelspitz and garlic soup. Although hearty appetites might find the portions a little scant, this leaves room for the desserts, described as 'fabulous'. The inn is an oenophile's delight, with a wide range of wines by the glass and a most knowledgeable wine-waiter.
Frau Figl, who also runs a coffee and wine business in Dornstein, took over her parents' hotel, set in a 200-year old former hunting lodge. The bedrooms are mainly white with pastel blue, pink, green or yellow. The suites are stylish also, with Biedermeier furniture.
Frau Figl encourages local artists by displaying their work and there is often a huge painting on an easel near reception. You may, or may not, like what is on show when you visit. Week-long programmes are offered, with lectures and tours on themes of churches, castles, museums and wine.
