This is about as authentic as you can get: a 13th century castle hardly touched by time (except for the addition of essential modern conveniences) offering a few rooms to travellers.
Stark, romantic and isolated on its hilltop, it will appeal to walkers and those in retreat from modern life. Heavy rustic furniture predominates.
Bedrooms are cosy and traditional - ceilings have wooden beams and walls are decorated with paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Tower Room is the most fascinating - originally built in the year 1,000. Guests can stay here for an authentic medieval experience - although it is not as comfortable as other bedrooms it has impressive views over the Tuscan countryside from its panoramic balcony.

GREAT BARGAIN

Family-run, great location

Off-season rates are brilliant at this long-standing favourite We've known about Gliffaes for many years and hesitated to put it in the guide despite its fine reputation because it seemed a little large (21 bedrooms), a little imposing, but above all not especially relaxed or personal. Then one d...
