Angles sur l'Anglin, with beautiful scenery and a number of great monuments or frescoes, is one of ‘France’s Most Beautiful Villages’, and is most impressive indeed. Settle in for a relaxing stay at Le Relais du Lyon d’Or, and you’ll wish you had just one more day. This is great place to relax with a good book, savour a drink on the terrace, or visit that little something nearby that caught your eye.
This centuries old coaching inn, home for Dominique Fuscien and Diana Hager since June 2005, is shaping up nicely. The old stone walls and wood beams are coming out of hiding and finishing touches are continuously evolving - warm colours, period furniture, antique light-fittings and chandeliers and modern comforts such as Wi-Fi in case you can’t be out of touch for too long. From the intimate restaurant with a high beamed ceiling and a baronial fireplace, to the cosy lounge for rainy day cover and the inviting terrace and garden alive with greenery for an outdoor dinner or drink, the welcome is always warm.
Each of the 10 guest rooms is unique, some with big windows, others with rooftop panoramas, some with intricate beam work or with antique terra cotta tiling. The bathrooms are clean and modern but not overdone.
Wine is a key component of any stay here - Mr Fuscien, a wine consultant (formerly in St. Emilion), has personally chosen each of the references in the cellar, and many bottles that are tasted with dinner are available for visitors to take home. There is space to eat in comfort both inside and out, and the restaurant prides itself on using sustainable development practices, top-quality local products and carefully chosen local suppliers.

Family-run, great location
Off-season rates are brilliant at this long-standing favourite
We've known about Gliffaes for many years and hesitated to put it in the guide despite its fine reputation because it seemed a little large (21 bedrooms), a little imposing, but above all not especially relaxed or personal. Then one d...
