Set in the centre of a peaceful Borders village, Skirling House was designed in 1908 by the Arts and Crafts architect Ramsay Traquair. We are delighted to report that owners Bob and Isobel are well aware of the architectural gem they have on their hands and, from the ornate wrought iron-work and decorative carvings to period antiques, the Arts and Craft movement is evident throughout. Lord Carmichael commissioned the house and, left over from his family’s art collection, is an impressive 16thC Florentine carved ceiling in the drawing room. In keeping with the relaxed atmosphere, you can sit back in one of the comfy sofas or armchairs and admire the ceiling, or simply cuddle up with a good book beside the log fire.
Bedrooms, very much in the style of the place, have lovely views over the three-acre garden. The grounds cover 115 acres and, with the surrounding rolling hills, provide ample chance for a light stroll or a more ambitious ramble. The menu, modern and light in style, changes daily and the Hunters use local produce as well as veg- etables and herbs from the house gardens.
Located by one of the main routes to Edinburgh, Skirling House makes a convenient stop-over, and we think, with its interesting design and tranquil setting, a worthwhile one.
